The FirstLook Engine Diagnostic Sensor connects to the exhaust or vacuum side of the engine to be tested and offers a fast and accurate method to diagnose automobile engine problems such as burnt valves, bad injectors and other performance problems without major disassembly of the engine.

The FirstLook sensor is particularly suitable for use with a Pico automotive oscilloscope, but can also be used with most other modern lab scopes.

The PP218 is a 10mA to 60A current clamp, ideal for use with a Pico automotive oscilloscope for measuring the current drawn by smaller devices, such as fuel injectors and fuel pumps.

We recommend the use of the TA000 or TA020 automotive test lead (see below) to connect the current clamp to the oscilloscope. Alternatively, a 60A current clamp with BNC connector is available.

Note: the KI-PP218 low amp probe is supplied with shrouded 4mm (banana) plug type connectors so can not be plugged directly into a PicoScope.

The KI-PP179 is a 600A current clamp, ideal for use with a PicoScope oscilloscope for displaying starter current waveforms, charging currents and for performing relative compression tests.

Note: the PP179 high amp probe is supplied with shrouded 4mm (banana) plug type connectors so can not be plugged directly into the PicoScope. We recommend the use of the TA000 or TA020 automotive test lead (see below) to connect the current clamp to the oscilloscope. Alternatively, a 600 A current clamp with BNC connector is available.

Due to the high voltages involved in secondary ignition systems, it is not possible to make measurements by direct connection; attempting to make a direct connection will almost certainly damage the measuring instrument.

The PP178 is a capacitive pickup that simply connects around the insulation of an ignition circuit component such as a plug wire — this avoids the need for direct connection.

The PP178 comes with a shielded 2.5m (100 inch) lead. It is suitable for use with conventional ignition systems and most HEI and DIS systems. Our library of Automotive Waveforms contains example waveforms captured using an automotive oscilloscope and the PP178.

The TA000 test lead has been custom made for automotive use with a Pico automotive oscilloscope. Its length (3 meters / approx 10 ft) allows the oscilloscope to be placed on the work bench away from the car being tested / repaired. A wide range of probes, clips and gators can be plugged into the 4mm connectors at the end of the cable. The cable is fully screened to reduce noise pickup.

Pico’s universal 6-way breakout leads eliminate the need to own many specific breakout leads for engine diagnostics. The breakout leads are available with 3 different sizes of connectors: 1.5 mm, 2.3 mm and 2.8 mm.

The breakout lead is simply connected into the existing cable loom and enables voltage readings to be taken from the numerous sensors in the engine compartment. The output signal can then be taken from the 4 mm banana plugs into the input of the PicoScope oscilloscope using the TA000 test lead.

KI-TA012 2 PIN AUTOMOTIVE BREAKOUT LEAD

The TA012 breakout lead enables voltage readings to be taken from the numerous sensors in the engine compartment. The breakout lead is simply connected into the existing cable loom, and the output signal can then be taken from the two 4 mm banana plugs into the automotive oscilloscope using the TA000 test lead.

Note: A TA000 test lead will be required to convert the 4 mm banana plug connection on the TA012 into a BNC connector suitable for plugging into the PicoScope
